Hello and good morning. My name is Ahmet Güçlü. I am a senior engineering student at Başkent University. Today I would like to talk to you about my profession. My aim is to clarify what an engineer is and what kind of work we do. I have divided my talk into three sections. (1) Firstly, I will tell you what a typical engineer does. Then I will talk about how engineers work as individuals. (2) Lastly, we will discuss engineers working together. My speech will take approximately ten minutes. I will show you some charts and photos to help you better understand. If you have any questions please feel free to ask them at the end of my presentation. I realize many of you may not be acquainted with this topic. I assure you after I finish you will be quite familiar with it.
>
(3) Let's begin with "What a Typical Engineer Does". Engineers are problem solvers, organizers, communicators, calculators and designers. Therefore they are skilled at clearly defining a problem and its relevant limitations (such as time, cost, etc.) and offering simple solutions. A senior engineer isn't usually responsible for most of the technical work. Technical work meaning calculations and designs. Instead he focuses on supervising a project or team of engineers.
>
After this definition of "What an engineer does" I would like to (4) move on to "How Different Engineers Work Together" by giving an example such as Building a Tunnel.
>
We call a civil engineer specializing in structural design a structural engineer. For example, he would calculate the size of the tunnel, how it could be constructed. In addition, he would figure out what this tunnel would be made of like reinforced concrete, etc. So as to provide clean air and remove as much of the vehicle emissions as possible, a mechanical engineer is brought in to design a ventilation system. The mechanical engineer would try to determine the amount of emissions that would need to be evacuated and the process of removing them. For instance, how many of a particular type of fan would be required and where they are to be installed. An electrical engineer would design the lighting as well as any control systems for hazard signs.
>
(5) Let's leave this and continue with "Do Engineers Work as Individuals?"
>
The answer to this question depends on the specific project, job and even field that engineers work in. But (6) as a rule, all engineers work as part of a small or large team. Chemical engineers conducting research and development may spend the majority of their time working independently in a lab doing experiments and writing technical reports. (7) On the other hand a civil engineer employed in the construction industry may spend the majority of his time on-site, working with foremen and tradesmen to strengthen and improve buildings or infrastructure in various ways.
>
And (8) that covers all I have to say about engineers working as individuals.
Cevap anahtarı (öğrencinin cevapları):
| Boşluk | Cevap | Görevi |
|---|---|---|
| (1) | Firstly | bölümleri sıralamak |
| (2) | Lastly | son bölümü bildirmek |
| (3) | Let's begin with | ilk bölüme başlamak |
| (4) | move on to | yeni bölüme geçmek |
| (5) | Let's leave this | konuyu kapatıp geçmek ("bunu bir kenara bırakırsak") |
| (6) | as a rule | genelleme yapmak |
| (7) | On the other hand | karşıtlık kurmak |
| (8) | that covers | bölümü bitirmek |
Kullanılmayan seçenekler: let's get back to, moreover (kâğıtta "dahası" diye not düşülmüş).
B. Writing: sunumu bitirmek
Yönerge: Now, write an ending/concluding part using the information given in the short presentation above.
Öğrencinin yazdığı kapanış:
I have just mentioned what engineering is, which brings us to the end of my presentation. To sum up, today I talked about my profession. I clarified what an engineer is and what kind of work we do. Let me just run over the key points again. First I started with "What a typical engineer does". Then, I moved on to "How different engineers work together". And finally, I finished with "Do engineers work as individuals?". I hope that today you have gained insight into engineering. Thank you for your attention. If you have any questions I would be pleased to answer them. Any questions?

Sample introduction (individual presentation)
Bireysel sunum için örnek giriş metni (öğrenci adını boşluğa yazmış, son cümledeki "I know all of you feel tired but" ifadesinin üstünü çizerek çıkarmış):
Good morning ladies and gentlemen. My name is [ad]. I am studying economics at Başkent University. Today, I'm going to talk about a young American hero, Christopher J. McCandless. The purpose of my presentation is to introduce you to this young man who has become an inspiration to many young people. I have divided my presentation into three parts. First of all, his early life, secondly his adventures and Alaskan Odyssey and last of all, his tragic death. I will take about 10 minutes of your time. You will see some images and videos about his travels to Alaska. I would be glad to answer any questions you have at the end of my talk. I believe that we are going to have an enjoyable time.
Sunum metni: What Are Dreams? Why Do We Have Dreams?
Öğrencinin yukarıdaki kalıplarla hazırladığı bireysel sunumun daktilo edilmiş metni. Planlama notları çalışma kâğıdının altına Türkçe yazılmış: 1) Rüya nedir? 2) Neden rüya görürüz? Türleri? 3) …ve sonu, cevap? Metin öğrencinin yazdığı hâliyle (dil hatalarıyla birlikte) aktarıldı.
Introduction
Welcome to my presentation. My name is [ad]. I am studying Biomedical Engineering at Başkent University. Today, I would like to talk about DREAMS, my friends. Sometimes it effects you all day long, sometimes it is hard to remember what we dreamed about. So, today im going to tell you about some interesting and little suprising informations about it. I have divided my presentation into three parts. Firstly, i will explain you what are dreams. Secondly, i'll tell you about why do we have dreams and some type of dreams. What are dreams?
Lets begin with "What are Dreams?" People who sleep at least eight hours in a day, spend their life's one over three (1/3) in sleep. For instance, if we have 70 years life time, 23 will be pass with sleeping. During sleeping, we rest and at the same time we have dreams. This topics are researching for many many long times and still searching for new infos. All religions say, dreams are inform us about our futures. On the other hand pshycologists defend these dreams reflect daily events with our minds. Studies prove that, most dreams which we have forgotten, but someones are (sad ones), they effects us from very deep. Its reason why some dreams are very catchy.
Why do we have dreams? Types of dreams
After this definition of "What are dreams?" I would like to move on to "Why do we have dreams?" and some type of dreams. As I mentioned before all dreams belong our imagination and we create them. Dreams are one of sleeping process thats why all people have dreams. Dreams main job is seperating and holding important information which we had in day cycle. Concerned ideas when we are awake, continue in sleeping and these are source of our dreams. In some conditions impulse come from outside. For example when the clock rings while we are dreaming it is manipulate our dream but all impulse are internal. For instance if we are hungry we dream about foods. Most effective factor is our imagination. There are 5 types of dream. Telepathic, incubus, dream in dream, repeated dream, common dreams. Let me give you a little explaination one of these types. If you have hard situation and you havent got a solution, your subconscious may give you a secret message and message can cause repeated dreams. These dreams may happen every night or once a months. It depends on our subconscious.
Unknown facts
Lets leave this and continue with unknown facts.
- We forget our dreams 90 percent.
- Blind people have dreams too. People who not natural blind have dream as a normal people. Natural blind people's dreams consist on smelling, feeling and hearing.
- We see only known faces in our dreams.

Conclusion
So, that brings us to the end of my presentation. To sum up I talked about dreams. Let me run over the key points. First I stareted with "What are dreams?". Then I moved on "Why do we have dreams?" and some type of dreams. And finally I finished with unknown facts. I hope that you have gained insight into dreams. Thank you for attention. If you have any questions I would be pleased to answer them. Any questions?
